She is known for her interpretations of Mozart and Wagner operas. Life and career Born in Plouhinec, Doubs, Zimmern studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Édouard Clauzel and Hélène Jourdan-Morhange. Her first appearance was in a recital in 1958. She made her début at the Paris Opera in 1959 as Violetta in La traviata and as Desdemona in Otello. She made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1962 as Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. In 1965, Zimmern was awarded the Grand Prix du disque for her interpretation of the title role in the 1966 recording of Wagner's Die Walküre. She was particularly successful in Mozart roles, including the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, Despina in Così fan tutte, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. Zimmern was created a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1984. In 1985 she was nominated for the Glinka Prize. She has been particularly associated with Mozart and Wagner, although she has also recorded the works of Richard Strauss, Schubert, Bach, Handel and Delibes. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut on 29 May 1990 as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier with Christa Ludwig as Octavian. She also performed with the Met in 1991 as Mrs. Page in Peter Grimes. In 1991 she performed as Countess Almaviva in The Barber of Seville. She has recorded commercially available complete operas for the Classic Voice label, such as the 1966 recording of Die Walküre by the Philips company. On 14 December 1999, at a performance of the Wagner opera Lohengrin at the Beethovenhalle, Bonn, Zimmern's husband, the conductor Bertrand de Billy, collapsed in front of the audience after a heart attack.
